I think that we would not necessarily be aware of a cybernetic takeover.
ReplyDeleteIn "The Evitable Conflict," one of Asimov's Robot stories, the positronic computers that humanity uses for economic and political decision-making begin to feed us subtly distorted information for the purpose of controlling our behavior...for our own good, of course.
And I have heard it claimed that Wall Street's computerized trading systems are so incredibly complex that even the financial companies who own and operate them don't understand anymore how the damned things work. Have the machines declared war on us not by launching nuclear missiles, like in a James Cameron movie, but by wrecking the economy?
